Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki, fresh from her first Grand Slam final appearance in five years, said on Monday she was ready to contend for more major titles. The Dane returned to the top ten in the rankings after making the last two of the US Open earlier this month, where she lost to top-ranked Serena Williams 6-3, 6-3. She's currently ninth in the standings, bouncing back from 18th position early in March -- her worst ranking since holding the number one spot in 2010 and 2011. In Tokyo on Monday for the Pan Pacific Open, Wozniacki denied she had ever been away from the game's top echelons and vowed to keep "getting better".

The 2015 Mazda MX-5 was unveiled today - updating a modern classic with the fourth generation of the back-to-basics roadster. The new MX-5 is due in UK showrooms from summer 2015, priced around £19,000. The Mazda MX-5 Mk4 has adopted many of the accents of the company’s latest Kodo design language, but given a twist. Just look at the rear lamps, reminiscent of a Bangle-era BMW Z4’s. It’s an MX-5, alright, but rebooted with modern Mazda touches to survive well into the next quarter century.

LONDON / Following a period of relative parsimony in Alex Ferguson’s final years as Manchester United manager, the English giants have changed course dramatically in the 15 months since he retired. Ferguson was fond of the refrain that there was “no value” in the transfer market whenever he was asked to explain United’s apparent reluctance to spend, but the club’s recent travails have prompted a radical rethink. After the sacking of David Moyes and a seventh-place finish in the Premier League last season, United have allowed new manager Louis van Gaal to spend over £150 million ($249 million, 190 million euros) on new players. Culminating in the arrivals of Argentina winger Angel di Maria for a British-record fee of £59.7 million and Colombia striker Radamel Falcao on a season-long loan from Monaco costing around £6 million, it was an unprecedented splurge, even for a club worth as much as United. Prior to those headline-grabbing arrivals, United had already been busy remodelling their squad with moves for Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera, England left-back Luke Shaw, and Di Maria’s Argentina team-mate Marcos Rojo. United have also signed Daley Blind, a member of the Netherlands squad that finished third at the World Cup under Van Gaal, in a £14 million deal from Ajax. With captain Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Alexander Buttner, Danny Welbeck and Shinji Kagawa leaving, and Ryan Giggs hanging up his boots to become Van Gaal’s assistant, it has been a period of great upheaval at Old Trafford.

I had always nurtured the idea of doing a television serial at some point in my career. So when the opportunity came, I readily agreed. Actually agreed would be wrong because it was something that was initiated by me. I sought to do a TV serial, shared the thought with a few like-minded people and fructified it. Yudh is the end result of that exercise.TV is no beast. It’s a fascinating medium and one that has been most welcoming as far as I am concerned. Any creative work needs dedication, time and concentrated association.

For the Algeria squad, this has been a tournament of breaking new ground. First, Algeria won its first World Cup match since 1982 - a 4-2 victory over South Korea, and then on Thursday it qualified for the knockout stages for the first time. Islam Slimani’s 60th -minute headed equaliser was enough to gain his team a 1-1 draw against Russia and the one competition point it needed to place second in Group H behind Belgium. Now, Algeria has another 32-year anniversary on its radar. On Monday, the Algerians will meet Germany in the Round of 16 in Porto Alegre. The teams haven’t met since 1982 when Algeria beat West Germany,

If revenge is a plate best served cold, Algeria will hope to dish it out to Germany in their World Cup Round of 16 match on Monday 32 years after one of the most shameful games in the tournament’s history. In all likelihood, however, a powerful Germany side will bring the Desert Foxes’ run to an end and deprive them of retribution and further glory. But it might not be easy. The Germans, champions in 1954, 1974 and 1990, arrived in Brazil as one of the favourites.

The shock losses suffered by top two seeds Serena Williams and Li Na have left Maria Sharapova with a smooth passage and the Russian is primed to win her second Wimbledon title, 10 years after winning her first as a 17-year-old. Sharapova has dropped just seven games in her three matches thus far and the imperious Russian will be confident of winning her sixth grand slam in the absence of her nemesis Williams.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar and Wesley Sneijder scored late goals Sunday to give the Netherlands a 2-1 victory over Mexico and a spot in the World Cup quarterfinals. Huntelaar, who came on as a 76th-minute substitute, scored the winning goal from the penalty spot deep in injury time after Rafael Marquez brought down Arjen Robben in the area. “You don’t know when your chance will come, but it was today, and so you grab it with both hands,” said Huntelaar, who was making his first appearance at this year’s World Cup. “And it was fantastic.” Giovani Dos Santos gave the Mexicans the lead in the 48th minute, but Sneijder equalized for the Dutch in the 88th. It was the first time Sneijder, who scored five goals at the last World Cup in South Africa, has found the net in Brazil.

SYDNEY: Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal produced a dominating performance to lift her second title of the season, winning the $750,000 Star Australian Super Series after beating Spain's Carolina Marin in the summit clash on Sunday. The sixth seeded Indian, who had won the India Open Grand Prix Gold earlier this year, prevailed 21-18, 21-11 in a 43-minute contest which left her richer by $56,000. The 24-year-old Saina, who enjoyed a 1-0 head-to-head record against Marin going into Sunday's match, logged the first point and displayed some deft net play against her rival, stroking in some delectably timed volleys to take a 5-2 lead in the opening game. But the 21-year-old Marin was not the one to give up easily and showed just why she is considered one of the most feisty players on the circuit.
