White is tricky but not difficult to carry for anyone. You just need to know how. It is crisp, bold and perfect for any season. White-on-white is the most noticeable trend on catwalks across the world this season - from New York and London to Milan, Paris and India. It is in line with the focus on minimalism and tonal outfitting, which is currently sweeping designer collections and street stores.

START SMALL:

An all-white suit with a white watch and shoes will have you looking like Jumping Jack Jeetendra. Instead, start small with a white polo neck tee and jeans. Break it down with one accessory in a different colour, like a pair of stilettos in mustard yellow.

PLAY WITH SHADES:

Contrary to popular opinion, white is not the absence of colour. In fact, it encompasses a range of shades including ivory, cream, snow, eggshell, cornsilk, baby powder and ghost white. Use a blend of these or other tones in your ensembles to avoid looking washed-out. For instance, men could wear

a snow white cotton shirt with cornsilk linen pants for a relaxed evening out.

CUTWORK:

Cutwork is a vintage technique that derives from the primitive art of netting. It is a type of embroidery in which pieces of the foundation fabric are cut away, creating a network of holes and eyelets that are accentuated by the embroidery pattern. Apart from traditional hand cutwork, laser cutwork is popular these days. Cutout, in fashion terminology, means strategically cutting out fabric from an outfit for a sexy effect. Tailor or shop for white pieces with cutwork or cut-outs for an edgy white-on-white look.

TEXTURES, LAYERS:

Use white fabric in contrasting textures — like a rough jute skirt with a soft silk blouse — to cut the starkness of pure white. Layering is one of the best ways to avoid looking monotonous; just make sure you don’t combine more than four layers in one look. Dos & don’ts: Switch to white liner or shadow on your eyes; white is hot in the make-up scene and makes your eyes look bigger. Invest in a crisp white shirt. It’s a versatile item of clothing and an essential for any season. Create a balance in a colourful ensemble by wearing only white accessories. Don’t hesitate to embrace white because it might make you look wider.
