Upbeat Afghanistan look to seal series
After being outclassed in the first game of the three-match series, Bangladesh will be searching for quick answers to turn around their fortunes as they gear up for the second match against Afghanistan in Dehradun on Tuesday (June 5). It was the turn of the spin troika of Mujeeb ur Rahman, Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan that ripped apart Bangladesh's middle order after a poor stroke from Mushfiqur Rahim opened the doors for a flurry of wickets to hand Afghanistan a 45-run win. Bangladesh, ahead of their must-win clash, need to find a route to tackle the threat of Nabi, Mujeeb and Rashid on the spinner-friendly track in Dehradun. The failures of Tamim Iqbal and Sabbir Rahman to golden ducks didn't help their cause and laid added burden on the likes of Shakib, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah.
Asian Youth Championship: Three Indian boxers enter medal rounds
BANGKOK: Indian male boxers endured a mixed day at the Asian Youth Championships, where three advanced to the medal rounds and qualified for the Youth Olympics, while six others lost in the quarter-final stage on Tuesday. Ankit Khatana (60kg), Bhavesh Kattimani Kumar (52kg) and Aman (+91kg) won their respective quarterfinal bouts to enter the semifinals and book a berth in the Youth Olympics, which will take place in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires later this year. While Ankit defeated Korea's Seomho Shin by unanimous decision, Bhavesh got the better of Malaysia's Rasdenal Haikal Muhamad, also a 5-0 verdict. Aman, on the other hand, had to toil hard for his 3-2 triumph over China's Ma Jinyang.
Heena Sidhu shoots Games record 25m pistol gold
Decorated shooter Heena Sidhu has won her second medal of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, taking gold in the women's 25m pistol (Precision/Rapid) finals at the Belmont Shooting Centre on Tuesday. The 28-year-old - recipient of the Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA) Shooter of the Year award in February for her success in 2017 - shot a CWG record 38 to cap off a dominant performance in the eight-member final.
Kohli admits heavy 'workload' taking toll on his body
Virat Kohli, the India captain, has conceded that heavy workload of playing cricket across three formats, is taking a toll on his body. The point can be capsulised by the fact that the fulcrum of India's batting has played 25 Tests, 42 ODIs and 27 T20Is alongside representing Royal Challengers Bangalore in a couple of IPLs since the start of 2016. It is also going to be a busy year ahead for Kohli and co. as India are set to tour England and Australia.
Virat Kohli named ICC Cricketer of the Year
Indian captain Virat Kohli had something to cheer about after the second Test debacle against South Africa when he was named the ICC Cricketer of the Year at the ICC Awards on Thursday. Kohli was also named the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year and captain of both ICC Test and ODI teams. In the qualification period from September 21, 2016 to the end of 2017, Kohli scored 2,203 Test runs at an average of 77.80 including eight centuries and 1,818 ODI runs including seven centuries at 82.63.
Rohit Sharma is ahead of Virat Kohli in limited overs: Sandeep Patil
Former BCCI chief selector Sandeep Patil stirred a fresh controversy saying opener Rohit Sharma is a better batsman than skipper Virat Kohli in limited overs cricket. Virat is definitely a great batsman, no doubt about it. Rohit recently blasted a record third ODI double ton, leading the home side to a 2-1 win in the three-match rubber against Sri Lanka in the absence of regular skipper Kohli, who took a break to tie the knot with Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma.
Novak Djokovic brings Stepanek into coaching team
PARIS: Former world number one Novak Djokovic said on Thursday Radek Stepanek was joining his coaching team to complement Andre Agassi. Agassi and former doubles specialist Stepanek will replace the Serb's former coaching duo of Boris Becker and Marian Vajda. He parted company with Becker last year and ended a seven-year association with Vajda in May after seven years working together.
Noah stays on as France Davis Cup skipper
PARIS: France's Davis Cup captain Yannick Noah will oversee his team's defence of the title they won last weekend with success over Belgium in the final. "@NoahYannick has confirmed his wish to defend the Silver Salad Bowl (trophy) and will be captain of #TeamFranceTennis @Davis Cup in 2018. RDV in Albertville on February 2 against the Netherlands," the French Tennis Federation announced on Twitter on Thursday. Noah, 57, guided France to a tenth title but first since 2001 with a 3-2 triumph over Belgium in Lille.
Federer, Nadal urge caution over rule changes
LONDON: Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal said they welcome innovation in tennis but warned the game's administrators on Friday not to tamper too much with the current format. A series of rule changes and innovations are being trialled at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan, featuring the world's top 21-and-under singles players. They are aimed at creating a high-tempo, TV-friendly product geared towards attracting new and younger fans. Rule changes include a shorter format with first-to-four-games sets (tie-break at 3-3), a shorter warm-up, a 25-second shot clock used between points, no line judges, player coaching and no doubles lines on the court. Federer, in London for the ATP Finals, starting on Sunday, said he had enjoyed watching the matches on TV but urged caution. "We need to think, take seriously all these rule changes if ever you're going to do it because once you do it you don't want to bounce back and forth with changing something and then you don't like it later on," said the Swiss world number two.
