Cristiano Ronaldo scored five times as Real Madrid moved to within a point of Barcelona at the top of La Liga with a stunning 9-1 thrashing of Granada on Sunday. Ronaldo then took over as he scored three times in eight minutes just after the half hour mark. Karim Benzema struck twice either side of Ronaldo's fourth as Real added three more in a four-minute spell just after the break. Robert Ibanez grabbed a consolation for the visitors, but Diego Mainz's own goal made it 8-1 before Ronaldo rounded off the scoring with a towering header. Barca can restore their four-point lead when they visit Celta Vigo later on Sunday. Defence minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday launched the first of the six Scorpene submarines (Project 75) at the Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL). An MDL official said that the submarine after carrying out tests at sea will dock back again. "After undergoing trial test run at sea to check technical glitches, if any, the sub will be commissioned on September 2016," said the official. Originally, the first submarine was to be ready for induction in 2012. However, the project has been delayed. According to sources, Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) has informed the Navy that the project would be delayed by another 18 months from the 2015 deadline announced by defence minister AK Antony in Parliament last year.

Saina Nehwal created history on Saturday as she became the first Indian woman shuttler to attain the world number one ranking after her closest challenger for the spot, Spain's Carolina Marin, lost in the India Open Super Series semifinal here. Though the official rankings will be out only on Thursday next week, the 25-year-old Indian has been assured of her ascent to the top thanks to Marin's loss in the last-four stage. The reigning world champion, who was seeded second, lost to third seed Thai Ratchanok Intanon 21-19 21-23 22-20. Prakash Padukone had the distinction of being the No. 1 men's badminton player but Saina became the first Indian woman to achieve this feat. Saina plays Japan's Yui Hashimoto in the second semifinal but the Indian ace will be No. 1 irrespective of her result today. The London Olympic bronze-medallist has won a staggering 14 international titles in her glorious career, and most recently she became the first Indian woman to make the finals of the prestigious All England Championships in Manchester. If Saina loses in semifinals, she will finish with 75761 points after pocketing 6420 for reaching the last four. Carolina, on the other hand, will gain 6420 points for her semifinal finish here which will take her total points to tally to 73618.

London Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal on Saturday scripted history by reaching the final of the prestigious All England Badminton Championship with a straight-game victory over Sun Yu of China in the women's singles competition. The World No. 3 Indian, who reached the semifinals of the event in 2010 and 2013, defeated the unseeded Sun 21-13, 21-13 in a match that lasted for 50 minutes at the Barclaycard Arena. Saina is now just one step away from joining Indian legends Prakash Padukone (1980) and P Gopichand (2001) who have bagged the prestigious title in the past.

In yet another accident in the Navy, a Russian-origin Kilo-class submarine INS Sindhughosh suffered some damage when a fishing boat hit its periscope during a special operation off the western coast late on Thursday night. The 3,000-tonne submarine INS Sindhughosh, which was participating in the major naval exercise Tropex (Theatre Readiness Operational Level Exercise) in the Arabian Sea, was at "periscope depth" when the incident took place in the intervening night of Thursday-Friday.

In less than two days after taking oath, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has written to the Centre seeking services of IFS officer Sanjeev Chaturvedi, who is likely to head the anti-corruption branch of Delhi government. Chaturvedi is currently serving as the deputy director of AIIMS. Kejriwal has sought services of the IFS officer in Delhi government as an officer on special duty.
